Australia’s premier thoroughbred horse race, the Melbourne Cup is one of the most iconic racing events in Australia and New Zealand. On the first Tuesday in November each year, riders from across the globe compete for a $6.2 million prize purse in front of a crowd of thousands at Flemington.  

New Zealand has had a long affinity with this prestigious race. Winners such as Ethereal, Empire and Kiwi have all crossed the Tasman to taste cup victory. But going racing on Melbourne Cup Day is as much about fashion, hats and fascinators as it is about fillies.
