Looking ahead to Saturday, the big event in Melbourne is the running of the WS Cox Plate, at Moonee Valley. The Cox Plate has been hugely successful for New Zealand bred and trained horses, with the likes of Bonecrusher winning in 1986 in what is known as the ‘Race of the Century’. Champion mare Sunline won the Cox Plate twice in her racing career (1999 & 2000) and her win in the year 2000 was voted the people’s favourite race recently on Trackside’s ‘Your Choice’.

Ocean Park holds the kiwi hopes high going into the 2012 running of the Cox Plate this weekend. He heads into the race in blistering form, winning three consecutive Group 1 races and one of the favoured runners. The Cox Plate is set to run at 7.15pm NZ time on Saturday.

In other Melbourne Cup news – Dunaden took out the Caulfield Cup with a stylish win, he looks to defend his Melbourne Cup title on the first Tuesday of November and is now the favourite for the big race. In 2001 New Zealander Ethereal was the last horse to win the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the same year.
