Tips and Tricks
New to racing? Don’t fret guys and gals, your Survival Guide for all-day glam is just a click away.
Racewear is ensemble dressing (every element of your outfit is important) so everything should complement each other.
Here’s our guide to surviving summer racing fashionably.
- Dress to impress: Dress to impress: With the arrival of summer and warmer weather; coral, bright pinks, emerald greens, sunshine yellow, and oranges are the go to colours. Opt for a light frock or push the fashion boundaries a bit more with a stylish jumpsuit or playsuit (but nothing too short).
- Hats on this season: It’s important to remember that your millinery must compliment your outfit. Giant soft blooms paired with structured feathers, parisisal straw, leather, guipure lace, and perspex are popular this summer. Hop over to our for hat-spiration.
- Shoes: You’re going to be on your feet all day so we recommend a comfortable strappy wedge. But if you opt for stilettos (good choice), make sure you break them in before raceday.
- Accessorise, baby. Your should be an elegant extension of your outfit. It should also be big enough to hold your ‘raceday essentials’ (below). Choose jewellery that complements. Sunglasses are a must for those bright summer days in the field.
- Add the final touches A manicure, perfect makeup and signature scent are essentials for your day. Opt for a hairstyle that complements your headwear – a low chignon or pony tail is a popular option. And treat yourself to a facial to ensure your skin is glowing.
- Cover up: Keep a tailored jacket or chic pashmina on hand in case the temperature drops.
- Sort your essentials: Aspirin, a safety pin (in case of mishaps), your make-up reapplication kit (foundation, lips and eyes), a mini hairspray to keep hair in check, sunscreen if it’s sunny or an umbrella if it’s not, and those little lifesavers, band aids
- You look stunning – but can you last the distance? Eat a good breakfast in the morning (it could be the last thing you eat for hours) and ensure you stay well-hydrated throughout the day. (Note: Champagne, whilst delicious, is not really ‘hydration’...)
- Okay gorgeous, you’re ready to race! Have fun and make sure you organise a safe route home. Oh and don’t forget to tag a selfie on !
Whether you’re entering Fashion in the Field or are looking to claim a prize of another sort, here’s your six step guide to looking dapper this raceday.
- These days’ suits are not mandatory but if you are going to suit up, ditch the Monday to Friday suit and tie and invest in a tailored suit. Be daring and step away from traditional black - go for fashionable shades of blue and grey.
- Take the time to pick out a great shirt and tie combo - it’s often how people identify you in a crowd! Your shirt should be well-fitted, clean and pressed. Long, regular ties, skinny ties and bow ties are all fashionable; go for the option that best suits your personality.
- Shoes should be clean and polished and complement your outfit, whether its traditional black, brown or tan - or something a little more flamboyant!
- Add extra flair to your outfit with accessories. Stylish sunglasses, a hat, pocket squares and cufflinks are great ways to help you stand out as a stallion amongst colts.
- Looking good at the races is all about the little details. Book in for a haircut to ensure your hair looks sleek come raceday. Make sure you’re clean-shaven and well groomed: Trim your fingernails and any stray hairs. Moisturise (or at the very least, slap on some SPF), splash on some aftershave and your signature scent and you’re good to go.
- Word to the wise: Having one or two drinks before you hit the catwalk might help your courage but be careful it doesn’t turn into one or two too many. Last the distance to make sure you have a day/night to remember!
Winning Tips
- The basis to all fashion and style is good grooming - make sure you have a good long shower, wash and condition your hair, use deodorant and body crème and perfume and all the other things that make you feel girly and special.
- Have breakfast! This may be the only proper solid food you have all day and if you're to last the distance you need more than just 'champers' for brekkie if you're to be a winner in any stakes at all!
- If you're applying fake tan yourself make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you're using a professional make sure they are professional and the results are good by having a trial before they big day. Nothing spoils an outfit more than a streaky orange body underneath.
- Always have two outfits ready for the day. There's nothing worse than being either too hot or too cold, and if you're entering Fashion in the Field one of the conditions is the suitability of the outfit to the day. Nothing looks sillier than a silk dress and a net hat on a day that's pouring with rain.
- Check the weather forecast and take an umbrella if it's going to rain and remember your sunglasses if it's sunny. Incorporate them into your look - but at the end of the day you'll look far sillier without an umbrella than foregoing it because it doesn't match your outfit. Never, ever use your hat as an umbrella.
- Make sure your outfit allows for changes in weather. If you have a sleeveless dress take a jacket or wrap, and if you have a jacket make sure you have something under it so if you start to swelter you can always whip it off.
